Ian Miller has been Chief Executive of Wyre Forest District Council since December 2009. After 13 years in the civil service working on a number of areas of policy and legislation, he moved to local government in 2000 as head of finance, Welsh Local Government Association and then from 2002 as chief executive of Denbighshire County Council. From 2002 to 2008, Ian was also clerk to North Wales Fire Authority.
Ian is the Council’s paid service and principal policy advisor, leading and directing the workforce of over 300 employees and responsible for a net budget of £13m. He is supported by two Directors and has line management responsibility for the Chief Executive’s Unit, which leads on the Wyre Forest Forward transformation programme, performance management, communications, elections, committee services and emergency planning; Solicitor to the Council (legal services, HR); Chief Financial Officer (accountancy and audit, procurement, payroll); and customer services, revenues and benefits. He is the returning officer for local and national elections and referenda.
Educated at St Anne’s College, Oxford, where he read classics, Ian has been a Member of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives since 2002 and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in 2000. He is Junior Vice Chairman, SOLACE West Midlands branch; joint chair, West Midlands District Councils’ Network and also represents the West Midlands on the DCN’s Chief Executives’ Group; and a Member of the National Council of ALACE. Ian is also a trustee of the Carpet Museum Trust.
